✨ Introduction to Editors

  • An editor (or text editor) is a software program that allows users to add, delete, and arrange text such as letters, words, sentences, and paragraphs.

  • It enables us to create, open, view, and edit plain text files.

  • Web developers use editors to write and edit programs/scripts in programming and markup languages.

🔹 Examples of Text Editors

  • Notepad – Windows text editor (.txt)

  • WordPad – Windows text editor (.rtf – rich text format)

  • TextEdit – Apple macOS text editor

  • Emacs – Powerful text editor (all platforms)

  • Vi and Vim – Common in Linux (also available on multiple platforms)

  • Writer – Text editor and word processor

  • Notepad++ – Advanced editor for Windows

📝 Notepad

  • Default text editor in Windows OS.

  • Very basic editor with minimal features and low capabilities.

How to Open Notepad

Method 1 (Start Menu):

  1. Click on the Start button.

  2. Go to All Programs → Accessories → Notepad.

Method 2 (Run Command):

  1. Press Windows + R.

  2. Type notepad and press Enter.


Menus in Notepad

📂 File Menu

  • New → Ctrl+N

  • New Window → Ctrl+Shift+N

  • Open → Ctrl+O

  • Save → Ctrl+S

  • Save As → Ctrl+Shift+S

  • Page Setup → Set page size, margins, orientation, header & footer

  • Print → Ctrl+P

  • Exit → Close file & quit Notepad

✂️ Edit Menu

  • Undo → Ctrl+Z

  • Cut → Ctrl+X

  • Copy → Ctrl+C

  • Paste → Ctrl+V

  • Delete → Del

  • Select All → Ctrl+A

  • Time & Date → F5

  • Find → Ctrl+F

  • Find Next → F3

  • Replace → Ctrl+H

  • Go To → Ctrl+G

  • Search with Bing → Ctrl+E

🖋️ Format Menu

  • Word Wrap → Automatically move text to the next line.

  • Font → Change font style & size.

👁️ View Menu

  • Zoom In → Ctrl + +

  • Zoom Out → Ctrl + -

  • Status Bar → Toggle ON/OFF
