What is Web Hosting?
- Web hosting is a service where a provider allocates space on a web server for a website to store its files.
- When a user types your domain name into their browser, the hosting server transfers the necessary files (HTML, CSS, Images) to the user's computer.
Key Concepts of Web hosting -
- Server
- Domain name
- DNS
What is server ?
- A server is a powerful computer designed to run 24/7 without interruption.
- Unlike a personal laptop, it has special hardware (ECC RAM, enterprise-grade hard drives) to handle thousands of users visiting a site simultaneously.
- Server Software: The hardware runs specific software (usually Apache, Nginx, or Microsoft IIS) that "serves" the requested files to the browser using the HTTP protocol.
- Operating System: Most web servers run on Linux (CentOS, Ubuntu) because it is stable and secure, though Windows Server is used for websites built with ASP.NET.
What is Domain name ?
Computers communicate using numbers called IP Addresses (e.g., 192.158.1.38). Because these are hard for humans to remember, we use Domain Names (e.g., mysite.com).
What is DNS (Domain Name System)?
This is the "phonebook" of the internet. When you buy a domain and connect it to hosting, you are essentially telling the DNS: "When someone types mysite.com, send them to this specific IP address where my host is located."
