Components of a Computer System
A computer system consists of several essential components that work together to perform tasks efficiently. The main components include:
1. 🖱️ Input Unit
-
Accepts data and instructions from the user.
-
Converts them into a format understandable by the computer.
-
Sends the converted data and instructions to the system for processing.
2. 💾 Storage Unit
-
Provides space to store data and instructions.
-
Stores intermediate and final results.
-
Ensures data is available for current and future operations.
3. 🧮 Central Processing Unit (CPU)
-
Known as the brain of the computer.
-
Performs all major calculations and logical comparisons.
-
Controls and coordinates operations of other units.
🔹 Components of CPU:
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) | Executes instructions, performs arithmetic (+, –, ×, ÷) and logical (<, >, =) operations. |
| CU (Control Unit) | Directs operations of all other components, manages data flow, and acts as the “central nervous system” of the computer. |
4. ⚙️ Processor (Microprocessor)
-
A single chip combining ALU and CU.
-
Often referred to as the heart of the computer system.
-
Determines the performance and speed of the PC.
-
Speed is measured in Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS).
5. 🖥️ Output Unit
-
Receives processed results from the computer.
-
Converts coded results into human-readable form.
-
Delivers the final output to the user or external devices.
