MS DOS
- MS DOS stands for Microsoft disk operating system .
- It is a single user single tasking operating system.
- MS DOS was introduced in 1981.
- It was a joint project of IBM and Microsoft.
- It is a CUI ( character user interface) based OS.
- It is an OS with a command line interface used on personal computers.
How to open MS DOS:
1) Start → All programs → Accessories → Command.(For windows 7)
2) Windows + R → Run → CMD → Enter.
Types of commands:
i. External command
ii. Internal commands
Internal commands: internal commands are commands which get loaded into the main memory of the pc at the time of booting or starting up of a computer.
Types of internal command:
1) cls (clear screen):
It is basically used to clear all the information from the display screen .
Ex: C:\> cls →press enter button.
2) cd (Change directory):
it means to change the directory .
C:\> cd directory name → press enter button.
3) md (make directory ):
C:> md amit → press enter button.
4) rd(remove directory):
C:\> rd amit → press enter.
5)copy con:
This command is basically used to create a file. The only disadvantage of this command is the file created by this command can not be modified.
C:\> copy con file name .extension abc.txt
6) ver(show version) :
This command is used to see the current version of the DOS.
C:\> ver enter
7) type:
This command is used to display the content of a file on the screen.
8)date:
This command is to view the system date. Date as maintained by the DOS. It is also used to change the current date to that entered by the user.
9) Time:
It displays the current system's time. This command allows you to change the time also.
C:\> time → press enter
10)ren:
To change the name of an existing file.
C:\>ren book.txt book1.txt → press enter
11) del:
It is used to remove a file.
C:\ > type a.txt → press enter
12)Tree :
View the list of directories and subdirectories.
C:\ > tree a.txt → press enter
13) copy:
copy command is used for copying a file.
C:\ >copy source file new file → press enter
14) cd.. (change directory ):
It moves one level back to the parent directory.
C:\>cd.. → press enter
