History Of IoT

The concept of connected devices dates back to 1832 with the design of the first electromagnetic telegraph, enabling direct communication between machines via electrical signals. However, the true history of the IOT began with the invention of the 1980’s .

  • The first connected device, a Coca-cola vending machine at Carnegie Mellon University was created by local programmers who used an early form of the internet to monitor the machine’s functionality.
  • In the 1990’s , John Romkey created a toaster to the internet using the TCP/IP protocol which could be turned on/off over the internet.
  • University of Cambridge scientists using a webcam to monitor the coffee pot levels in their computer lab.
  • The term “Internet of Things” was coined by Kevin Asthon in 1999 during a presentation for Procter & Gamble, where he described the concept of interconnected devices using RFID tags for supply chain management.
  • The term gained widespread media use in the early 21st century, leading to the 1st International Conference on the Internet of Things in Switzerland in 2008.
  • Key developments included LG Electronic introducing an internet-connected refrigerator in 2000, which allowed users to shop online and make video calls.

These advancements significantly contributed to the evolution and growing interest in IOT Technology.
