Style Menu

About Style menu:The style options listed are typically used to apply predefined formatting to text, such as:

  • Paragraph formatting (like headings, lists, body text, and quotations).

  • Character formatting (like emphasis, strong emphasis, and source text).

The menu items shown fall into two main categories of styles: Paragraph Styles and Character Styles.

Paragraph Style:

These styles define the complete appearance of a paragraph, including aspects like text alignment, indentation, line spacing, font, and font size. They are applied to an entire paragraph.

Style Name Purpose
Title, Subtitle Used for the main titles and secondary titles of a document(Larger, often centered text).
Text Body(ctrl +0) The standard style for the main content or narrative of the document(Default font, size, and alignment).

Heading1(ctrl+1)

Heading2(ctrl+2)

Heading3(ctrl+3)

Used to structure content into sections and subsections.
Quotations Used for longer extracts or quoted material(Often indented or with slightly smaller/italicized font).
Preformatted Text Used for text that should retain its exact spacing, like code(Monospaced font).
Bullet list, Number list Styles for various types of lists.

Character Styles:

These styles apply formatting to a selected word or phrase within a paragraph, without affecting the rest of the paragraph's overall format.

Style Name Purpose
Default Character Resets local character formatting(Normal text appearance).
Emphasis Highlights specific words for moderate importance(Usually Italics).
Strong Emphasis Highlights specific words for high importance(Usually Bold).
Source Text For marking up code, variable names, or technical terms within the body text(monospaced font).

Advanced Style Management:

The additional options relate to modifying or organizing the styles themselves:

Edit Style: Opens a dialog to modify the properties of an existing style.

Update Selected Style(ctrl+shift+F12): Updates the selected style to match the direct formatting of the currently selected paragraph.

New Style from Selection(shift+F12): Creates a new style based on the direct formatting of the selected text.

Load Styles: Imports styles from another document.

Manage Styles (F11): Opens the Styles pane for vast management of all document styles.
